LAURINBURG — Scotland County native Daryl Dockery wants everyone to win. Especially nonprofit organizations in his hometown.

Dockery is hosting the fourth annual Cruisin For Kids Charity Car raffle and this isn’t just about selling tickets to raise funds. It’s about giving another tool to nonprofit groups to raise money without having to spend any.

“As a nonprofit administrator, even before the pandemic, we’re looking for sustainability plans to fill in those gaps in our services. So, what I did was reach out to stakeholders to see if they would join forces with me and I created the Crusin For Kids charity car raffle. And basically what it is, is a funding stream that nonprofits and community-based organizations can tap into and raise funds for their own project needs.”

And it doesn’t cost those organizations a thing to join the raffle.

“If a nonprofit wanted to sign up and become a raffle ticket distributor, they have an opportunity to sell physical or digital raffle tickets. What that means is based on their sales from the time allotment they set up, they would get $4 from every ticket they sell.”

The tickets for the car raffle are $10. And the car? It’s a brand new Mitsubishi Mirage G4 from D&E Mitsubishi in Wilmington.

“It’s fully loaded, 43 miles to gallon, it cost $19,000 and you get a choice of four colors. It includes the sales tax and registration fee. Somebody is going to win this car with a $10 ticket. You can buy as many tickets as you wish or you can sell as many tickets as you wish as a raffle ticket distributor. If you were to sell 5,000 tickets, our payout schedule for the raffle ticket distributor is December 22. So, if you sold 5,000 tickets, you get a check for $20,000 that day.”

Dockery said his marketing team will present the group with a check and feature them on the company’s social media accounts.

And even though the contest is called Cruisin For Kids, the nonprofit groups that participate don’t have to serve children alone.

“What I wanted to do, I’ve been doing various things in Laurinburg over the years. What we’re doing is trying to reach out to stakeholders and if they are providing a core service in the community, they can go to our website and register,” he said.

Dockery said this is a way for everybody to win. About 25 groups have signed up for this year’s campaign and he’s expected the numbers to increase.

“The drawing is December 10, so now is the time for any nonprofit to sign up. We’ve been getting the word out and groups are responding,” he said.

Over the past four years, Dockery said people in the community have learned how important these groups are in the community.

“You need nonprofits to provide services,” he said. “A lot of nonprofits are seeing that this is a funding stream that they can use and determine how much funds we can generate at no cost to us. They don’t have to pay for the car, they don’t have to pay for the tickets, they don’t have to pay for the marketing tools. All they have to pay for is their time and energy.”

Once the groups are signed up, Dockery said his group prepares the tickets, QR codes and website links for the registered nonprofit.

“For that raffle ticket distributor, they don’t have to worry about tracking the money or holding on to money. Each month, my team will give them a printout for the ticket sales for each month,” he said.

And Dockery said, his team offers tips to help groups sell more tickets. That even includes bringing the car to community events so that people can see what they’re entering to win.

“Our mission is to bridge those educational and social gaps that exist in our community,” he said. “Whether you’re in a rural town or a highly populated city, we still have our own set of challenges.”

Dockery’s hope is to alleviate one of the major challenges all nonprofits face and that’s funding.
