LAURINBURG — The Lady Scots tennis team traveled to Pinecrest on Thursday to play Richmond for a third time to determine second place in the SEC standings. The old saying it’s hard to beat a team three times rang true for the Lady Scots as they fell in a very close match, 4-5.

The Lady Scots picked up victories from seniors Camryn Ellis and Brooke Bathie in their first and fourth singles matches and picked up two doubles wins. Ellis teamed up with fellow senior Anna Griswold to win at first singles while Bathie teamed up with Claire Carter to earn a second singles win over the Lady Raiders.

With the SEC conference tournament being cancelled because of Hurricane Matthew the tiebreaker for second and third place was crucial. Pinecrest finished a top the conference standings at 10-0 while Richmond finished in second at 8-3 after the tie breaker and the Lady Scots finished in third at 7-4. Lumberton finished in fourth at 3-7 followed by Purnell Swett at 2-8 and Hoke at 1-7.

The NCHSAA extended the reporting deadline for girls tennis to Wednesday because of Hurricane Matthew. The Lady Scots will have to wait until then to find out where/if they were seeded in the 4A playoffs.

The Lady Scots finished their regular season with a 10-4 overall record and 7-4 in SEC play.
