LAURINBURG – County residents could soon have to plan new routes to school and work to avoid maintenance work being done on rail crossings beginning the this week.
Routine maintenance on railroad crossings from Hamlet to Pembroke began on Monday. Approximately 30 rail crossings in Scotland County will be down for maintenance.
Kristen Seay with CSX corporate communications, said the work is being scheduled with local authorities to give them time to create detours and alert residents.
“Maintaining railroad infrastructure is critical to preventing accidents and injuries and minimizing service disruptions,” Seay said.
County Manager Kevin Patterson said residents should to use extra caution and look out for workers.
“As they’re doing these, just be mindful,” Patterson said. “They’re going to be as quick as possible, but there will be a lot of activity around, and while they’re working on them it can be dangerous if you’re not careful.”
Work crews will tear out and replace old crossties and repave crossings with asphalt to make traveling over tracks smoother.
Work on a single crossing generally lasts three to five days depending upon the length of the crossing and weather conditions, according to Seay.
Seay added that CSX spends more than $1 billion annually for maintenance and improvements on tracks, bridges, signals and equipment.
