Laurel Hill Elementary School finds Golden Egg

LAURINBURG — The prize may be golden, but the staff at Laurel Hill Elementary plan to turn it blue.

The school recently won The Laurinburg Exchange Golden Egg Contest. They plan to use prize to celebrate April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month at the school. The color blue is used to symbolize the issue.

So far, school officials have raised $150 toward giving students an ice cream party.

Laurel Hill Elementary educators plan to ask the participating sponsors —Weknd Warrior Trade Co., Clips Haircuts for Men, Kimbrell’s Furniture, Highland Techs Computers and Scotland Tax Service, LLC — if they can exchange each $20 gift certificates for their cash value.

The contest began on March 22 with the newspaper printing 10 clues to help participants find the golden egg. The search ended with egg being found on Friday near the Scotland County welcome sign on US 401.

“We stopped on the side of the road and there it was,” said Joshua Peele, a social work major from The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, who interns at the Laurel Hill school. “We had been discussing the clues and were able to find it.”

Peele, who will graduate in May, said school officials also brainstormed about how to use the prizes. He said several faculty and staff are wearing blue ribbons and want to use the month as a way remember that everyone can make a difference and take steps to prevent child abuse.

“Those of us at the school had been working together on this and when we found the egg, we wanted to make sure that the prize went toward helping children,” Peele said.

April was designated as National Child Abuse Prevention Month 35 years ago by President Ronald Reagan as a time to recognize that child abuse and neglect is a problem in every state and community in the country.
