LAURINBURG — One night after a 10-2 loss at Purnell Swett, Scotland’s girls soccer team put on what coach Blake Dickerson believed was a better showing on Friday night in a 2-1 loss against Hoke on a rain-soaked pitch.

“There was a lot more communication for sure,” Dickerson said. “We’re actually moving the ball for once. We’ve been trying to work on first touches and moving more off the ball, and it’s definitely showing.”

Sarah Eury scored Scotland’s only goal on a free kick in the second half.

The pitch was noticeably damp due to rainfall earlier in the day. Wet patches in the grass frequently altered the path of the ball. The conditions worked in favor of the Lady Bucks (7-7, 5-5 SAC) in the first half. With both teams still scoreless, Scotland goalkeeper Sierra Breeden went to recover a shot by Hoke, but the ball slipped out of her hands and fell into the goal.

“You don’t know what’s going to happen with these puddles,” Dickerson said. “Everything’s unpredictable… We knew (the bleacher side) of the field was wet, and we knew the other side was dry, so we were able to move our players around and manipulate that, and keep our feet on that side.”

The Lady Scots (0-12, 0-9) continue to search for their first win of the season. They will host Seventy-First on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
