LAURINBURG — Carver Middle School’s football team defeated Spring Hill 22-14 at Pate Stadium on Tuesday night.
Carver head coach James McLean said he was proud of his team for getting a win against their rivals.
“There’s only two teams in the county, and you’re going to be the winner or you’re going to be the loser,” McLean said. “It feels much better to be on this side.”
Spring Hill scored the first touchdown of the game on a pass from Patrick Primus to Donnie McNair in the second quarter. Primus carried the ball on a successful 2-point conversion attempt to give his team an 8-0 lead.
Carver’s Braxton Campbell quickly responded by returning the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown. A successful 2-point conversion run by Izeem Graham helped Carver tie the score at 8-all.
Primus rushed for a touchdown later in the second quarter, and Spring Hill held a 14-8 lead at halftime after a failed 2-point conversion attempt.
Latrelle Martin rushed for a touchdown and a 2-point conversion to give Carver a 16-14 lead in the third quarter.
A touchdown pass from quarterback Roger Oliver to Isaac Ferguson helped Carver extend its lead to 22-14 after a failed 2-point conversion attempt in the fourth quarter.
“Our offensive line played a great game,” McLean said. “We were a little nervous coming out in the first half. Spring Hill smacked us in the mouth as they normally do. But again, the offensive and defensive line played well. Our running backs ran the ball hard, and our quarterback did a good job in passing situations. Just a gutsy win by the Eagles out here tonight.”
