East-West All-Star Games just around the corner

LAURINBURG — The 69th annual East-West All-Star Games are just one week away.

The East-West All-Star Games feature players who have just graduated from high school – the best from the Eastern half of North Carolina against the best from the West. The games were founded in 1949 by Coach Bob Jamieson of Grimsley High School and Smith Barrier, the Sports Editor of the Greensboro Daily News, to help finance the North Carolina Coaches Association coaching clinic.

The games no longer finance the NC Coaching Clinic but are still held in conjunction with the event. The games are played on consecutive nights beginning on Monday, July 17 with men’s and women’s basketball. Men’s and women’s soccer follows on Tuesday, July 18 and the games conclude on Wednesday, July 19 with football.

The Fighting Scots will be sending two recent graduates — Karfa Kaba and Amir McNeill — along with Scots head coach Richard Bailey who will return to the sidelines as the head coach of the East team. This is the second time Bailey has been named to the coaching staff for the East. Bailey will be assisted by Wake Forest’s Reggie Lucas, West Johnston’s Samuel Hales, East Carteret’s Caleb King, East Duplin’s Jack Holley and Rocky Mount’s Jason Battle.

Kaba and McNeill were key contributors to the Scots defense last season and will continue their football careers together in the fall at North Carolina A&T University.

An all-SEC selection Kaba, a defensive linemen, had 49 solo tackles, nine sacks, two fumble recoveries and caused a fumble to help the Scots defense hold opponents to less than 20 points per game.

McNeill also received All-SEC honors in the secondary leading the team with three interceptions. McNeill finished the year with 44 solo tackles, one quarterback sack and a fumble recovery.

Lumberton’s Tyriek McCallum was the other player from the Southeastern conference selected to play in the game.

The 69th annual East-West All-Star football game will be held in Greensboro at Robert D. Jamison Stadium on Wednesday, July 19 at 8 p.m. There will be a fireworks show at halftime.
