LAURINBURG — 16 members of the Scotland County Genealogical Society visited the Rankin Museum of American Heritage in Ellerbe.
The group takes a field trip annually and this year members saw the lifetime collection of Dr. Pressley R. Rankin, Jr., M.D. of Ellerbe, which are housed in the museum. It is divided into three main areas: natural history, American history, and Native American culture.
After viewing the huge assortment of artifacts and relics, the group visited the nearby Bostic School for a guided tour by its curator, Brenda Baucom. The meticulously restored one-room structure is over 160 years old and served as the center of education for local residents for many years.
Afterwards, the group had lunch at the Spring House Restaurant in Ellerbe Springs. On the journey home after the members disbanded, several members stopped for ice cream at “The Berry Patch,” which is purportedly the site of the world’s largest strawberry, a 24 foot tall structure on U.S. Highway 220.
