LAURINBURG — The Scotia Village Repertory Theatre will present the melodrama, “Run to the Roundhouse, Nellie – He Can’t Corner You There,” on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27-28, at 7 p.m. at Scotia Village.
This is the third melodrama produced by this group of residents. Cast members include Charlie Mullins as Hugo Hugo Swindle, Coralee Wolfe as Nellie Gauge, Brenda Gilbert as Harriet Gauge, Dennis Wolfe as Sterling Worth and Martha Roblee as Sheila Baggage.
Melodramas feature an improbable plot and always a villain who preys on the innocent heroine and a dashing hero who saves her. The audience gets involved by cheering for the hero and booing the villain throughout the show. Some members of the audience may even toss peanuts at the villain during the play,
In this show, Nellie is a good hand with a locomotive, but not much at catching the eye of her true love, rancher Sterling Worth. But Sterling is having his problems because villainous Hugo Swindle has discovered oil on his ranch and is attempting to take over the property. Nellie learns the truth, but Hugo will stop at nothing to achieve his evil goal. In true melodrama fashion, he ties Nellie to the railroad tracks.
Will she be saved by the hero? Come and see.
The show is directed by Gray Gilbert and produced by Brenda Gilbert, and the entire production, including designing and building the set, has all been done by Scotia Village residents.
“We have a very talented cast this year,” said Brenda Gilbert. “One cast member had some theatrical experience in high school and college, but the others are all new to the stage. The spoken dialogue in a melodrama is often accompanied by music and we are so fortunate to have Sue Fidler at the piano for our shows.”
There is no charge for the production, but donations will be accepted.
