LAURINBURG — The United Way of Scotland County campaign is closing in on its target and, as the year comes to a close, those wanting to contribute have just a few more days to help the organization reach the goal.
The campaign goal thermometer was filled to 90 percent on the organization’s Facebook post on Thursday. The Day of Caring, Sept. 7, was the kickoff date and it closes on Monday.
This year United Way raised the goal to $280,000 — which is $10,000 more than last year.
Executive Director Coy Moody said previously that the organization was stalled because of Hurricane Florence, but they refocused on raising money for the 18 non-profits they support and what really helps United Way reach its goal is the workplace campaigns.
She said employees give $1 or $5 out of their check a week from payroll. Those funds add the campaign funds raised by the board members and small fundraisers within smaller businesses and workplaces.
“Right now we know that people are fundraiser- fatigued with all of the ones happening,” said Kevin Patterson, county manager and United Way board member. “I just want to point out that giving to United Way is one of the easiest ways to help those in our community.”
He added the money stays local and and goes to the organizations United Way has partnered with.
