LAURINBURG — Police are investigating an early morning armed robbery at a fast food restaurant on South Main Street.

A McDonald’s drive thru worker said a man walked up to the window and brandished a weapon, according to Assistant Police Chief Terry Chavis.

There was a vehicle at the window at the time, Chavis said.

“A black male wearing a black and blue jacket came up between the window and the car, forced the window open, and pointed a gun,” Chavis said. “When he forced the window open and [the clerk] saw him with a gun, she backed up. The drawer was partially open because she was making change, and he reached in and grabbed the money.”

Police said the gunman got away with an undisclosed amount of money.

The incident happened at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Witnesses were not able to give an accurate description because the man took precautions to cover his identity.

“He was pretty much covered up. He had on a baseball hat turned backward, and he had something over his face, so they couldn’t tell a whole lot about him,” Chavis said. “Although they believe he may be light skinned.”

The thief was last seen fleeing in the direction of Bojangles toward Biggs Street.

Police are working to obtain the surveillance footage from McDonald’s security cameras.
