Volunteer fire departments from Shiloh, Yanceyville, Wentworth, Asheboro and several other towns were at the Speedway in Laurinburg on Monday morning filling their trucks up with diesel. Police offers has the pump blocked off so the fire trucks could fill up.
Several of the art rooms at St. Andrews University flooded over the weekend as a result of the lake on campus breaking its edges. All classes on campus were cancelled for Monday and Tuesday.
Sheets of metal from a nearby building hung like curtains on the main Duke Energy transformer in Laurinburg, cutting power off to the entire city for most of the weekend.
Many of the local gas stations, including the Kangaroo Mart on S. Main St. had regained power on Monday but were out of gasoline. The few stations that had gas were backed up 20 and 30 cars deep.
The flashlight aisle at Wal-Mart was cleared out on Saturday as Hurricane Matthew tore through Scotland, Robeson, Cumberland and the surrounding counties.
Maintenance workers at St. Andrews University used pumps on Monday morning to try and drain the water out of classrooms on campus that flooded. Classes were cancelled for Monday and Tuesday as a result of the flooding and the campus being without power.
A car was crushed by a tree over the weekend as a result of the heavy rains and high winds that Hurricane Matthew pummeled the area with. As of Monday afternoon, there were no deaths or injuries reported in Scotland County as a result of the storm.
One of the bridges on the campus of St. Andrews was lost to the lake because of the heavy rains the area experienced due to Hurricane Matthew.
