LAURINBURG — On May 3-4, Scotland Regional Hospice will hold its 36th annual golf tournament, a two-day charity golf event which raises funds used to provide care to the terminally ill and their families in the community. Since its inception, the hospice organization’s premier fundraiser has been sponsored each year by Eaton Golf Pride with Scotch Meadows Country Club playing host.

Due to COVID-19 protocols and safety measures in place, last year’s tournament was moved from its traditional spring timeslot and took place just a few short months ago in September of 2021. Even with the move, over 170 golfers participated in the 2021 tournament which raised just over $121,000. Employees of Golf Pride Grips and over 60 volunteers throughout the community make the tournament possible by participating in the planning process, recruitment of sponsors, silent auction contribution requests from vendors, enlisting golfers, and helping with the daily activities at the event.

While the biggest part of the fundraising total comes from area businesses and individuals who sponsor the tournament, the accompanying silent auction also contributes to the tournament’s success. The 2021 auction featured over 300 items including a whitewater rafting trip, autographed balls and other sports memorabilia, handmade furniture, artwork, golf equipment, and much more.

The tournament uses the Low 2-Ball format which allows participants to play their own ball. The entry fee for golfers is $150 for men and $100 for women. The entry fee includes golf cart, on course beer and soft drinks, two mulligans, silent auction access, invitation to the post-tournament celebration, lunch and dinner, putting for cash challenge, hole-in-one for a car competition, closest to the pin competition, and dream drive competition.

The women’s tournament will take place on Tuesday, May 3rd with a shotgun start at 10:00 a.m. Men can play on Tuesday May 3rd at 10:00 a.m. or on Wednesday May 4th at noon. Registration will open one hour each day before the start time. Since space is limited, online registration is strongly encouraged at www.scotlandhospice.org.

The event will conclude following play on Wednesday with the post-tournament celebration. Attendees will enjoy cocktails, dinner, sponsor recognition, live auction, music from The Jim Morgan Jazz Group and the Lawson’s Gift raffle drawing.

This year, Scotland Regional Hospice will be celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Lawson’s Gift Raffle which allows ticket holders an opportunity to win jewelry that has been graciously donated by Bob’s Jewel Shop in memory of Lawson McCabe. The raffle alone has raised nearly $300,000 for patient care and an announcement of this year’s raffle will be made in the coming days.

Scotland Regional Hospice is seeking any individuals, businesses, and organizations that would like the opportunity to be a part of this exceptional event – which has raised more than $4 million used to provide safe, high-quality, compassionate end-of-life care to those patients and families in the community who are facing a life-limiting illness – to join them as a tournament sponsor.

Over half of the individuals who pass away in Scotland County are served by hospice giving the county one of the highest deaths served by hospice percentages in the state of North Carolina. Scotland Regional Hospice’s seven-county service area also extends to Robeson, Hoke, and Richmond counties in North Carolina as well as Marlboro, Dillon, and Chesterfield counties in South Carolina allowing them to improve the quality of life of hundreds of terminally ill individuals and their families each year.

“None of this would be possible without our supporters,” said Kim Hammonds, Scotland Regional Hospice executive director. “As a not-for-profit agency that serves people without regard to their ability to pay, Scotland Regional Hospice has endured these trying times thanks to the unwavering support of individuals, corporations, and organizations in our community. We couldn’t be more grateful.”
