Lady Scots battle Pirates

LAURINBURG – The Scotland High girls basketball team showed resilience against Lumberton on Tuesday night, but a slow start hurt the Lady Scots in a 51-39 loss to the Pirates.

Asjah Swindell led the Lady Scots with 15 points. Alyra Parker tallied 11 points, including a trio of 3-pointers. Kadence Sheppard added nine points.

Lumberton held the Lady Scots scoreless in the first quarter. That helped the Lady Pirates build an early lead that reached 18-2 in the second period.

The Lady Scots faced a 22-8 halftime deficit, and they quickly got to work in the third quarter.

Two consecutive 3-pointers by Parker cut Lumberton’s lead to 29-21 in the third. Shortly after that, Parker made another 3-pointer to make it 33-26.

A Lumberton free throw followed by a perimeter shot from August Smith gave the Lady Pirates a 37-26 lead at the end of the third period.

Scotland got within 10 points of the Pirates again in the fourth quarter, but Jauslen Hunt scored six points in the final period to help Lumberton secure the victory.
