LAURINBURG — Carver Middle School’s baseball and softball teams remained undefeated by beating Cordova Middle School on Thursday.

Lady Eagles aim for another title

Carver’s softball team had a strong all-around performance as the defeated Cordova 15-0.

Notable performers for the Lady Eagles included Lindsay Locklear, who finished with a home run, a triple and two runs scored, as well a Morgan Monroe, who finished 2-for-2 with a walk, a double and two runs scored.

The Lady Eagles improved to 5-0 on the season. Head coach Casey Bormet said her team is focused on repeating as champions this year.

“I’m lucky to have a really good group of girls,” Bormet said. “It makes my job a whole lot easier. They’re doing really well. They have a lot of expectations. We won the championship last year, and a lot of people expect us to do it again. So far, they are rising to that occasion.”

The Lady Eagles have 17 players on their roster, and Bormet said they all have similar ambitions.

“What’s impressed me the most so far is their mentality,” Bormet said. “Sometimes things don’t go right in a game, and you can get down and let it destroy you. So far we’ve had a couple hiccups with people not feeling well and errors on the field, but it hasn’t gotten them down. They’ve played through that, and that has really impressed me.”

Carver’s softball roster includes Natalia Rodrigues, Laela Oxendine, Daliyah Ratliffe, Morgan Monroe, Lindsay Locklear, Sydnee Dial, Destiny Driggers, Summer Newton, Alexis Covington, Madison Willoughby, Kortni Boney, Turner Poole, Nateya Scott, Tayhler Locklear, Jenna Luquer, Irlyn Ramos, Isabel Allen, Isabella Hopkins and Natalie Smith.

Experience is key for baseball team

W.J. Allen went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored to help pace Carver’s baseball team in a 16-1 win against Cordova.

Carver took advantage of numerous errors by the Cavaliers.

Head coach Rodney Patterson said his team came in with some knowledge of the game this year.

“It’s a good group of kids,” Patterson said. “They’ve been playing baseball a long time. A lot of them learned the game well before they got into Carver. That’s one of the fortunate things I have over here at Carver. They’ve been playing the game for a while.

“They seem to have fun together, and that’s the important part.”

Patterson said that experience is evident in his team’s work ethic.

“Some of these kids love the game of baseball, and they want to work at it,” Patterson said.

Carver’s baseball roster includes Dylan Tucker, Garrett Sellers, Cadyn Graves, W.J. Allen, Britt Lowe, Roger Oliver, Cameron Cole, Grant McCoy, Thomas Taylor, Jamie Goins, Eli McCoy, Turner Bounds, Blane Wagner, Bryant Kimbrell, Micah Clark, Alex Hatcher and Dakota Seals.
