LAURINBURG — The Fighting Scots golf team managed to play nine holes on Monday at Deercroft Country Club in Wagram before the skies opened up.
It was the Scots fourth Southeastern conference match of the season and they finished in fifth place with a team score of 199. Pinecrest won the short nine-hole match with a team score of 144 followed by Purnell Swett in second with a score of 169 and Hoke in fourth shooting a 186.
Leading the Scots was Nick Thompson shooting a 41, followed by Mason High with a 48. The Scots other two golfers, Grey Martin and Ian Smith each shot rounds in the mid-50s. Martin shot a 56 and Smith shot a 54.
Pinecrest’s A.J. Ceechler and Attie Giles shot the lowest rounds of the afternoon each turning in a nine-hole 35.
Since the beginning of their season, the Scots scores have improved over the past four weeks. In their first match at Bayonet at Puppy Creek in Raeford the Scots shot a combined 374 as High led the way with an 18-hole 84. Thompson wasn’t far behind shooting a 92, followed by Hartwell and Smith who each shot a 99.
The Scots then traveled to Pine Crest Country Club in Lumberton where they tied for third with Richmond as both schools shot a team score of 371. High again led the Scots with the team’s lowest round shooting an 88. Thompson was only one stroke behind shooting a respectable 89. Hartwell was the only other Scots to shoot under 100 with a 92. Smith shot a 102 and Martin rounded out the scoring for the Scots with a 116.
Last week, the Scots returned home to Scotch Meadows finishing in fifth place with a team score of 412. Winning the match was Pinecrest shooting a 285 to win the SEC match.
In their home match, the Scots were led by High, who shot a 92 followed by Thompson with a 97. Smith struggled on the day shooting 110 and Martin didn’t fare much better shooting a 113.
The Scots golf team is back in action on Monday, April 10 at 2 p.m. at the travel to Pembroke.
