LAURINBURG — Thursday is National Day of Prayer and Scotland County residents are urged to participate and receive a blessing.

There will be no gathering this year because of the coronavirus pandemic, instead it will be held over the phone.

“If ever there was a time that we needed to pray, it’s now,” said Darrel Gibson, pastor at Nazareth Missionary Baptist Church. “Local clergy will lead our community in 12 hours of fervent prayer — and we invite you to join.”

Essie Davis is the National Day of Prayer coordinator and she hopes residents will join in on the National Day of Prayer.

“This year’s 2020 theme is, “Pray God’s glory across the earth,” Habakkuk 2:14,” said Davis.

There will not be a formal gathering like there normally would be due to the governor’s stay-at-home orders.

“We will only do a conference call line,” Davis said. “Although we can’t join together physically we still desire to unite the spirits and hearts of our community as we petition the throne of God.”

Residents wishing to participate need to simply dial 1-669-275-1601.

“Someone will answer to lead in corporate prayer and to lift prayer requests on your behalf,” said Davis.

Everyone is encouraged to join in by calling the conference call line. There will be local clergy to lead residents in target prayers and to offer prayers on behalf of those who have requests.

“Recognizing the pressure of violence and gangs our youth face we are hosting a special Youth Prayer Hour from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.,” said Gibson.

The prayer line will open at 6 a.m. and end at 6 p.m.

“From our theme, it’s our belief that even in all of the many things happening in our community and nation we know that God’s glory will be revealed across the land. In the midst of all we are enduring God will be glorified,” said Davis.

“We hope the community will join us this Thursday May 7. on our Prayer Call,” said Davis.

It is the hope of the committee that the National Day of Prayer will resume back next year at the Scotland County Courthouse at noon around the flagpole.
