MAXTON – Scotland County deputies are investigating what appears to be a homicide early Friday morning on Jump Road in the Maxton.

The death was first reported as a traffic fatality in the industrial area near the Laurinburg-Maxton Airport, according to Major Ruben Castellon chief detective with the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office.

“I can tell you that we are investigating a homicide that occurred around 2 a.m. today,” Castellon said Friday. “When the [State Highway Patrol] realized through their process of investigation that the individual had been shot, then we became involved.”

Authorities are not releasing much information in the case. They say the victim is a 28-year-old man named Rodney McDuffie Jr. of Maxton.

Investigators were at the scene for much of Friday with emergency vehicles lined the roadside near the industrial park.

Castellon would neither confirm nor deny reports that a judge and or district attorney had been called to the scene, he would only say there were several officials assisting the investigation.

The sheriff’s office doeas have information on possible suspects, according to Castellon.

“We do have several leads we are actually speaking to many people to bring the perpetrator or perpetrators to justice,” Castellon said.

Anyone with information on this shooting is asked to call the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office tip line at 910-277-4258.
