Faux pastorarrested ondrug charges

LAURINBURG — A Laurinburg man was arrested Monday after attempting to smuggle narcotics into the Scotland County Detention Facility.

The Scotland County narcotics investigator, in conjunction with the Scotland County Detention Facility, conducted an undercover operation within the detention facility after suspicions of an individual smuggling illegal substances into the facility were occurring.

According to investigators, James A. Morman III, 28, was discovered to be posing as a pastor and using Bibles to smuggle the illegal substances into the facility for inmates.

After the investigation, a sweep was done of the entire detention facility and a number of illegal substances and contraband were located. Narcotics identified in the Bible were two Suboxone strips.

Morman, along with current inmate Bryson Brown, 28, were charged and arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance within a prison or detention facility, felony delivery of a controlled substance to an inmate, controlled substance Schedule III, misdemeanor simple possession of Schedule III substance.

Additional charges are expected to follow in the coming days.
