RALEIGH — A construction worker died after a lift carrying the laborer collapsed on a North Carolina university’s campus.
The lift was extended about 35 feet (11 meters) in the air when dirt on the wet ground caved in around one of its tires Saturday, killing Tiburcio Mendoza, The News & Observer quoted state Department of Labor spokeswoman Natalie Bouchard as saying.
The accident happened at the site of a new, 185,000-square-foot (17,187-square-meter) sciences building at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, the news outlet said.
Mendoza was a subcontractor with DPR Construction, according to the company. A spokesman said DPR was working with investigators to determine the details surrounding the accident.
Campus police were called to the scene but are not investigating the incident, university spokesman Mick Kulikowski said.
