Chief deputy resigns from sheriff’s office

LAURINBURG — The Scotland County Sheriff’s Off lost one of its top-ranked deputies this week when Chief Deputy Lloyd Goins resigned.

That resignation came Tuesday, and Goins stated it was the result of not getting the support of Sheriff Ralph Kersey.

“I felt like that a chief deputy should have the backing and support of the sheriff and if the chief deputy doesn’t get that, then he doesn’t need to be the chief deputy,” Goins told area media. “There was some things that happened when he was out during his surgery and last week while he was on vacation. I feel like I just didn’t have his support. I feel like some of the decisions I made was in the best interest of the county. I thought it was best for me to step down and go back into retirement.”

Sheriff Kersey thanked Goins for his service in a statement.

“Over the last four years, he has truly been an asset to the Sheriff’s Office,” Kersey said. “He has taught me a lot and will truly be missed. I wish him the best. “

No replacement has yet been named for the position.

Goins, who has been in law enforcement for more than 30 years, said he will retire.
