PEMBROKE — The Givens Performing Arts Center will warm up the new year and take a trip down memory lane when the Motown revue “So Good For The Soul” takes the stage at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12.
Tickets are $36, $31 and $21 for adults, and $15 for children.
“So Good for the Soul” is a high-energy musical trip to the past performed by a cast of eight veteran entertainers and their band, including former members of The Marvelettes, peppered with Broadway savvy performers who had leading roles in “Dream Girls,” “Porgy & Bess” and “Showboat.”
The show features American songs. With musical director Gary Kupper on board, the iconic Motown Sound was recreated down to the slightest vocal and musical nuances in order to emulate American icons such as Marvin Gaye and Tammie Terrell, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, Gladys Knight and The Pips, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Lionel Richie, Mary Wells, and more.
The show features more than 30 top radio hits such as “My Girl,” “I Heard It Through The Grapevine,” “Reach Out,” “Shop Around,” “Dancin’ In The Street,” “Stop, In The Name Of Love,” “Ain’t Nothin’ Like The Real Thing,” “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” and “Uptight.”
Cumulatively, the cast members have performed on recordings with more than 30 million record sales and more than 40 years of both on- and off-Broadway experience. The director, musical director, choreographer and costume designer have jointly won more than 25 of America’s most prestigious theatre awards for their direction.
“So Good For The Soul” is one of several performances taking place in conjunction with the Act I Diner’s Club. Themed meals will be available for an extra charge, and will be served in the Chancellor’s Dining Room before performances in GPAC. Call the GPAC box office for information.
The show is sponsored in part by McDonald’s and Rust Enterprises, and grants from the Robeson County Arts Council and the N.C. Arts Council.
