BENNETTSVILLE, S.C. — A three people accused of stealing a tractor from a local business were arrested in Bennettsville hours after the crime, police say.
Jason Lee Mehler, 42, his wife Elizabeth Gabrielle Melher, 32, both of LeRoy Lane in Wallace, S.C. and Jennings Douglas Miles, Jr., 46, of NC 79 West, Bennettsville, S.C. have all been arrested for larceny and conspiracy Monday night.
The three were seen on surveillance video taking a John Deere 1025 R front end loader/ tractor at 1 a.m. Monday morning at Southeastern Farm Equipment on Joy Street, according to Patrol Captain Chris Young.
“A white Ford F250 with a trailer and three suspects pulled into the parking lot loaded the tractor onto the trailer and drove off,” Young said. “Between 8 and 9 p.m. the tractor was located in Marlboro County and the suspects were ID’d and apprehended.”
The three were arrested in Bennettsville after the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office received a tip.
“We got a tip that there was a new tractor out there, [in the area] that was not supposed to be there. We stopped them and ran the numbers on the tractor and it came back stolen,” said Investigator Robert White with the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office.
Neither Young nor White could say whether the three had any connection to the extensive tractor theft ring that was busted in Marlboro County last year because the current case is still being investigated.
The three were charged with felony possession/ receiving stolen goods over $10,000 and felony criminal conspiracy to commit larceny and are being held in the Marlboro County Detention Center pending extradition to Laurinburg.
