LAURINBURG — Lindsay Page Pratt III was sworn in this week as Scotland County register of deeds.
Pratt was appointed to the office to replace Debra Holcomb, who retired in March 2015.
He was elected to a full four-year term after running unopposed in November. Pratt is the seventh person to serve in the office since it was created by North Carolina General Assembly in 1899.
Scotland County Clerk of Superior Court Philip McRae conducted the brief swearing in ceremony Monday morning.
“[We] kept it sweet and simple and tried not to inconvenience the public,” McRae said. “They wanted to be able to hit the ground running.”
The Office of the Scotland County Register of Deeds serves as custodian for various public records by recording and preserving deeds, deeds of trust, powers of attorney, plats and various other legal documents. The office also issues certified birth and death certificates, marriage licenses and military discharges.
Pratt is a Scotland High School graduate and holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Wake Forest University. He is also a graduate of the University of Georgia School of Law.
Pratt has practiced law in the Winston-Salem area. Before to his appointment as register of deeds, he was chief operating officer of Reaves Engraving.
