The Scotland High School varsity softball team survived a late scare in the final two innings to beat Lumberton 6-4 Monday night.
Heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lady Scots held a 6-2 lead, but the Lady Pirates were able to add two runs to cut the deficit to two. Then, after Scotland went down in order at the top of the seventh, Lumberton had one final chance.
Two quick outs and it looked like the Lady Scots would put the game away. But, then after back-to-back hits and a walk, Lumberton had the bases loaded. Sophomore pitcher Sydnee Dial was able to get the last strikeout to end the game before the Lady Pirates could bring the potential game-tying and game-winning runs home.
Freshman Lindsey Locklear had a solo home run and sophomore Natalie Smith hit a double. Junior Kadence Sheppard, Locklear, junior Olivia Hyatt and sophomore Sydnee Dial each had an RBI.
In the circle, Dial pitched all seven innings, throwing 129 pitches with a strike percentage of .643. She gave up four runs off eight hits and totaled 13 strikeouts.
With the win, Scotland advances to 8-3 with just Wednesday’s rivalry matchup with Richmond left in the season. The Lady Scots need to win to keep pace with Jack Britt in the Sandhills Athletic Conference standings for the No. 2 spot and the second automatic playoff bid.
Scotland girls’ soccer wins second straight
Despite starting the season 0-9 and struggling with injuries the past few weeks, the Scotland High School varsity girls’ soccer team won its second straight game Monday night, beating Lumberton 2-1.
The Lady Scots trailed 1-0 for most of the game, but were able to net back-to-back goals in the final three minutes from senior Emma Herr and sophomore Emma Wlodarczak.
“They pulled off a great finish tonight,” said head coach Blake Dickerson. “They started a bit choppy, but then they finally started to connect passes and they pushed through to the very end.”
Scotland will conclude its season with a home game against Richmond on Wednesday night.
