LAURINBURG —St. Andrews men’s soccer picked up their first conference win of the season on Saturday afternoon in Laurinburg against Truett McConnell. The Knights’ 2-1 win over the Bears improved their record to 3-4-1 (1-3-1 vs conference teams) while Truett McConnell falls to 5-2-2 (3-2-1 against AAC teams) with the loss.

All of the goals in this game came in the second half and within the span of about 8.5 minutes. The Knights never trailed, scoring the first two goals before the Bears got their lone tally of the afternoon. Pedro Salomâo de Almeida got the game winning goal on an assist by Johan Trigo-Rios. Pablo Diezhandino got the other goal for St. Andrews while Marco Mandelka got the goal for Truet McConnell.

The shots on goal were about even with St. Andrews having six and the Bears getting seven. Cristobal Romero made five saves on six shots against for the Knights while Euan Brindley made two saves on four shots against for the Bears.

St. Andrews will stay at home for another conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon against Milligan. The game is scheduled to start at noon.

Women’s soccer shutout by Truett McConnell

The Knights hosted conference foe Truett McConnell on Saturday afternoon in Laurinburg but lost 6-0. The Knights fall to 0-9 (0-6 in conference games) with the defeat while the Bears improve to 6-1-2 (5-0-1 vs conference opponents) with the victory.

Truett McConnell got three goals out of Eliska Dvorakova, two out of Ashley Johnson and another from Grace Montgomery. The Bears also had four different players pick up assists on the goals. St. Andrews only had two shots on goal during the game, both coming from Diane Maillis.

Jaydin Sanchez had a busy day in goal for the Knights, facing 15 shots on goal and making nine saves. The Bears used both Emelie Taylor (for 68:30) and Danica Wittmann (for 21:30) in goal.

St. Andrews will have another conference matchup at home on Wednesday afternoon against Milligan. The game is set to start at 2:30 p.m.

Football game at Lindsey Wilson cancelled

The Knights had a road matchup scheduled for Saturday afternoon with Lindsey Wilson but the game ended up being cancelled. No reason was announced as to why nor was there any indication on if the game would be made up at another time. St. Andrews currently sits at 0-3 on the season with all of their games thus far having been on the road. Their next game will be both their first conference game of the season and their home opener on Saturday, Oct. 12 against Union Commonwealth.

The Knights fell on the road to Union Commonwealth in their matchup last season 33-6. This year’s game in Laurinburg is scheduled to start at noon.
