LAURINBURG — Scotland High School athletics will return to action on Monday following spring break.

Teams begin the second half of their conference schedules and quickly approach their respective conference tournaments and playoffs starting the last week of April. Tennis kicks off the SAC-8 tournament train on April 24 followed by track on April 28. Soccer, baseball and softball conference tournaments will be held the first week in May.

Baseball

The Fighting Scots baseball team is 11-5 overall and 6-2 in conference play. The Scots finished the first half of their Sandhills Athletic Conference schedule before spring break. The team will finish out the conference season with games against Pinecrest, Lumberton and Richmond. Currently Scotland sits in a three-way tie for second place with Jack Britt and Hoke County. Pinecrest leads the league with a 7-1 record. The Scots return to SAC-8 play on Tuesday hosting Pinecrest at 7 p.m.

Softball

The Lady Scots softball team is 5-6 overall and 2-6 in conference play. The Lady Scots picked up two conference wins over Seventy-First before spring break, moving them into a tie with Pinecrest for sixth place. Richmond, once again, leads the softball standings at 8-0. The team will open the second half of conference play on Tuesday hosting Pinecrest at 7 p.m. Softball will be on the road on April 11 in non-conference action against Terry Sanford at 4:30 p.m.

Soccer

The Lady Scots soccer team is 1-8-1 overall and 1-6 in conference play. The Lady Scots are clinging to one win this season, but are steadily improving holding teams to fewer and fewer goals each game. Scotland is in seventh place in the SAC-8 standings, with Pinecrest leading the league at 8-0. The team returns to the pitch on Monday to host Purnell Swett in their second to last home game. When the two teams met in March, the Lady Scots lost to the Lady Rams, 1-0. Games are set to begin at 6 p.m.

Tennis

The Fighting Scots tennis team is 9-2 overall and 9-1 in conference play. The Scots only SAC-8 loss came to Pinecrest in mid-March. The Scots have trounced all their remaining SAC-8 opponents for second place in the league behind the Patriots. The team is scheduled to host Seventy-First on April 10, but the Falcons did not field a team this year. The Scots will travel to Southern Pines on April 12 at 4 p.m. for their shot at a share of the SAC-8 championship.

Track and field

The Scotland High School track and field team will travel to Hope Mills on April 12 before finishing out their season at home on April 19. The boys and girls teams have improved at each of their four initial league meets, finishing no lower than third. In their first meet of the season at Purnell Swett, both the boy’s and girl’s teams finished in second place. In their second meet held at Jack Britt, the Scots finished second while the Lady Scots took third place. In Southern Pines, both teams took third place. Last week, the Scots won their home meet while the Lady Scots took second
