LAURINBURG — Student leader, community activist, steady and methodical those were the words used to describe Scotland High School senior Shane Dubbs.
Dubbs, a two-sport athlete, was looked to by both of his coaches to lead not only the Fighting Scots soccer team this past fall as a mid-fielder but also the Scots tennis team as their No. 1 singles player.
His dedication on the court and the field is only matched by his love of learning in the classroom. Dubbs has maintained a 4.2 GPA and is ranked in the top 20 in the Class of 2017 — which features almost 400 students.
Along with his academic excellence, Dubbs also earned recognition as one of the best defenders on the Scots soccer team and was named MVP for the Scots tennis team. Dubbs advanced to the 4A East Regional in the singles bracket and earned second-team all Southeastern conference.
For his hard work, Dubbs was named the Mountaire Farms/Civitas Media Scholar Athlete of the month for May for his work as a student and a multi-sport athlete.
The program’s mission is to highlight male and female senior student-athletes within Robeson, Scotland and Bladen counties who carry a 3.0 GPA or higher. Nominees need to also be recognized by their coaches for outstanding sportsmanship and perform with superior ability in athletic competition.
Each monthly winner receives a $1,000 college scholarship and becomes eligible for an additional $1,500 in college funds that is awarded later this month to the male and female scholar athletes of the year.
The senior was nominated by his tennis coach Atontra Ellis, who described Dubbs as someone who does not accept mediocrity.
“He pushes himself and is critical when he does not meet the academic, athletic and community goals he has set for himself,” she said in her letter of recommendation. “In the classroom and on the tennis court, Shane assumes leadership responsibilities. As captain of the men’s tennis team he helped in training and teaching skills, etiquette and sportsmanship that is necessary for the sport.”
Dubbs helped lead the Scots tennis team to a third place finish in the Southeastern conference with a 6-3 SEC record and an 8-5 overall record. On the soccer pitch, Dubbs and the Scots soccer team finished 6-10-2 and 3-7 in the SEC.
