ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. — The St. Andrews University men’s golf team was back in action in the AAC Spring Conference Championships hosted by Milligan College at Elizabethton Golf Course.
The men placed seventh out of 12 conference teams. The Knights shot a team score of 616 improving six shots from day one. St. Andrews shot 305 on day two to tie for the third best round of the tournament. Milligan won the tournament with a team score of 588 to win by 17 shots over runner-up Tennessee Wesleyan.
St. Andrews was led by a fifth place finish from senior Daniel Wieck, who made the all-tournament team with his two-day score of 148 to finish 4-over-par. Wieck shot a 78 in round one before coming back with a stellar second round 70 — which was the best score of the second round.
Fellow senior Carlo Stella finished 15th with his 151 — a 7-over-par. Stella shot a 74 in round one before firing a 77 in round two.
Senior John Lyle, playing as an individual, finished tied for 27th with rounds of 77 and 78 for a 155. Freshman Caleb Hensley shot consecutive rounds of 79 for a 158 to finish in 37th place. Junior Joe Hurn finished 43rd after shooting an 80 both days to end the tournament with a 160. Sophomore Alberto Firpi came in 48th place after rounds of 82 and 79 for a 161.
The Knights are back in action on April 24-25 to compete in the AAC National Qualifier at Governor’s Towne Club in Acworth, Ga.
Lady Knights lacrosse cruises past Montreat
MONTREAT — The St. Andrews University women’s lacrosse team rolled past conference foe Montreat College 14-3 earlier this week in its final game of the season.
The first 15 minutes of the game were competitive as Montreat tied the game at two. St. Andrews went on a 5-0 run to lead 7-2 at the half. Senior defender Laura Deihl recorded her second career hat trick by scoring three goals in the first half. Deihl scored a fourth goal in the second half for a season high.
St. Andrews scored the first six goals in the second half to take a 13-2. Freshman attacker Savannah Midgley recorded her first career hat trick scoring three straight goals over the first and second halves. She would also finish the game with four goals, an assist and four ground balls.
Senior Nikki Bass and junior midfielder Allie Aycock scored two goals apiece while Aycock added an assist, four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Bass also led the way with four draw control wins. Freshman attacker Tameria Richmond added a goal and three assists for four points on the day along with a season-high and team-best nine ground balls.
Freshman goalie Erica Marlowe played well with six saves on nine shots on goal. Marlowe finished her first season with 79 saves and a 12.7 goals against average. St. Andrews out shot the Cavs 33-13 while they also led the ground-ball category 32-12.
St. Andrews improves to 2-6 on the season and in the AAC under first-year coach Brooke Johnson while Montreat falls to 0-14 overall and 0-8 in conference.
Lady Knights softball sweeps Bluefield 8-0
LAURINBURG — The St. Andrews University softball team threw two consecutive shutouts to sweep its doubleheader with Bluefield College (Va.) earlier this week winning both games 8-0 in six-inning.
Game One: SAU 8, Bluefield 0
Senior starting pitcher Kori Ballard threw four shutout innings allowing five hits and striking out three, but left the game scoreless until St. Andrews put three runs on the board in the fifth. The Lady Knights put the game out of reach in the sixth with five more runs. Freshman reliever S.K. Brown came into the game in relief Ballard and threw two scoreless innings with two strikeout to lower her team-leading ERA to 3.44 and pick up the win improving to 2-6.
The Lady Knight offense, that came alive scoring eight runs in the final two innings, was led by three-hit games from Ballard and freshman Brennan Broadaway while Broadaway drove in five runs to lead the team. Junior Sam Lowder, and senior catcher Brooke Sikes recorded doubles while Ballard knocked a triple.
Game Two: SAU 8, Bluefield 0
Broadaway started game two for the Lady Knights, and threw six shutout innings for her third complete game allowing just one hit and one walk with one strikeout to improve to 6-9 on the season and lower her ERA to 4.62, third-best on the team.
Broadaway led the offense going 2-for-4 with a run scored as she increased her average to .381 on the season with a team-best 32 RBIs. Ballard also drove in three runs to lead the team while Mekayla Valentine drove in two runs. Shortstop Ashlyn Dial recorded a two-hit game while Ballard led with two stolen bases.
The Lady Knights improve to 15-27 overall and 6-12 in the AAC with the sweep while Bluefield falls to 20-16 and 4-12 in conference.
St. Andrews will host Reinhardt University (Ga.) on Saturday for their final conference games of the season in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
