America has lost another person of character, knowledge, and substance. Cokie Roberts passed away Tuesday at the age of 75 due to complications of breast cancer. She was named a Living Legend by the Library of Congress some time ago. Mrs. Roberts was a champion of the importance of women in American History. One of her books was entitled The Founding Mothers. She was, of course, a long-time journalist and news commentator.

I learned Wednesday on Charlotte’s NPR station WFAE that she was also one of the “founding mothers” of NPR in the 1970s. Her last book, I believe, was an illustrated one for children based on the women in American history.

She was at times a tough questioner and always a sharp, knowledgeable commentator on a Sunday Morning news TV broadcasts. But she always treated others with all due respect, and would generally speak with a smile and with some humor in the mix.

She will be greatly missed but will live on through her writings, commentaries and interviews of her that were recorded.

Thank you,

Stephen Dickens
