LAURINBURG — Police said they have arrested a Laurinburg man who robbed a grocery store at gunpoint on Wednesday.
City police officers said they received a call about an armed robbery in progress at the Piggly Wiggly. When officers arrived, store employees told police that a man armed with a handgun had come into the store, pointed a gun at cashiers and demanded a cash register drawer.
Employees complied with the request and the man took the drawer and ran from the store at 229 E Church St., police said. No employees or customers were injured during the incident, according to authorities.
Witnesses say the man who robbed the store got into black vehicle and headed down east down Church Street.
Officers said they were able to catch up with the vehicle and arrested 20-year-old Malcolm Tovias McMillian.
McMillian was charged with one count of felony possession of a stolen firearm, one count of felony possession of a stolen vehicle and one count of felony assault by pointing a gun. His misdemeanor charges include robbery with a dangerous weapon, speeding to elude arrest, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest.
He is being held at the Scotland County Detention Center under a $123,000 secured bond.
Authorities have not disclosed how much money was taken.
