LAURINBURG — Police are investigating the shooting of a Laurinburg man in his leg that occurred Sunday.

The incident occurred on Produce Market Road where a 20-year-old male was struck in the head with a pistol before he was shot in the leg.

The man was treated and released from Scotland Memorial Hospital. According to the report from the Laurinburg Police Department, the victim and witnesses refused to cooperate with police or tell law enforcement who the suspect was.

The shooting is the first with injury to come after numerous shootings from April 16-27 and “Operation Blackout” on May 1-2 put on by the police department, Scotland County Sheriff’s Office, North Carolina State Highway Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives.

“Operation Blackout” seized 13 firearms and had more than 8- criminal charges ranging from felonies to misdemeanor charges.

Following “Operation Blackout” Laurinburg Police Chief Darwin “Duke” Williams met with the Laurinburg City Council per request of Mayor Pro Tem Mary Evans.

Williams told the council that he was grateful for people in the community who do have forward but a lot of people don’t come forward anymore due to witnesses not being protected as they used to be.

Mayor Jim Willis added about the most recent shooting that he is standing behind the police chief during these times.

“We have been made aware of the situations and have the utmost confidence in our police chief and his department,” Willis said.
