LAURINBURG — Local businessman Kenneth M. Purcell, owner of Purcell Funeral Home & Cremation Services, passed away on Saturday.

He was 55 years old.

“I’ve known Mr. Purcell at Purcell Funeral Home for some time now,” said State Rep. Garland Pierce on WLNC News Monday morning. “I always enjoyed fellowship with him anytime he could sit down.

“He was involved in a lot of community activities that I was involved in,” continued Pierce, “And I always enjoyed our time together.”

There will be a graveside service held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Serenity Memorial Park Cemetery in Raeford.

“Surely the community will miss him,” said Pierce. “He had a wonderful personality.

“He worked with families during their time of bereavement, he made you feel very special when around him,” added Pierce.

There will be a public viewing held Tuesday and Wednesday — Tuesday’s will be held from noon until 8 p.m. at Purcell Funeral Home in Southern Pines; Wednesday’s viewing will be from noon until 8 p.m.as well and will be held at Purcell Funeral Home in Laurinburg.

“He was a young and upcoming gentleman in our community and I am going to miss him,” said Pierce. “Our prayers and thoughts are with him, his family, his staff and all those that knew him.”

Purcell is survived by his wife Barbara Purcell and three children: Kendrick Purcell, Sherry Walker and Diontai Kelly.
