LAURINBURG — On Thursday, C&J Smoove Cuts was full of parents and children for free haircuts thanks to Lawrence Jackson Funeral Home.

To help prepare both students and parents for back to school, the local funeral home hosted the annual free haircuts and school supplies event. The event started at 9 a.m. and went to 5 p.m., but not long after it started at least 20 people had come for the school supplies and many waited for their haircuts.

“First and foremost for us being black business owners in this community, we want to be able to make a difference,” said Lawrence Jackson IV, the operations manager for the family run business. “Getting your haircut is a big part of going back to school, so we wanted to help and take that burden off of parents and students.

“We want them to know our hats are off to them and we’re wishing them a successful school year,” he added. “and this is our gift to them.”

Jackson added that they were prepared for at least 60 children, with clear backpacks filled with supplies as well as bags of supplies for those students who already had a backpack for the school year but still needed supplies.

For Stephanie Barfield, a single mom of two, she said that this event was extremely helpful for her in getting her 11- and 6-year-old children ready to go back to school.

“As a single mom it helps a lot,” Barfield said. “I’m really appreciative towards them that they would take the time out to do this for people in the community and it really does mean a lot.”

Jackson hoped that this event will help students get excited and prepared to start the school year on the right foot.

“We want to wish all the students good luck on the school year,” Jackson said. “And to remind them that we’re here in this community and we want to continue to give back.”
