LAURINBURG — America’s favorite meat-eating and singing plant is coming to Laurinburg.
The St. Andrews Theatre is getting ready to present the “Little Shop of Horrors” by Howard Hashman.
“It’s a classic — ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ has been around for 40 years and it’s fun, funny and the plants come alive, so it’s magical,” said Cinny Beggs, director and theatre instructor for St. Andrews University.
She says the 12-member cast is comprised of students and residents who have been practicing and preparing for six to seven weeks for the upcoming three-day run.
Auditions were in early February and, though rehearsals started at the end of that month, Beggs said that spring break took a bit from their practice time as well.
“It’s a very complicated show with a lot of moving parts,” said Beggs. “It’s difficult to deviate from the known characters but a couple of (actors) have put their own twist on it.”
She named Jacob Young, a senior, who plays Seymour as the lead and Nicole Perrin, a sophomore, who will portray Audrey. Mr. Musinik is played by Matthew Fletcher. Beggs said that she helped build most of the set but thanked some younger students who made the plant props.
“I have to shout out and say thank you to North Moore High, (in Moore County) who made the plants,” added Beggs.
Opening night is April 11 at 7 p.m. at the Morris Morgan Theatre in the Liberal Arts Building on campus. The next two showings will be April 13 and 14 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and can be purchased at the door.
She said she hopes the community will come to experience a “magical” time.
“It will take you back to a time when you thought life was innocent,” said Beggs.
