LAURINBURG — Lowe’s Home Improvement in Laurinburg was one of 16 stores in the national chain to give 500 families affected by Hurricane Florence meals on Tuesday.
Lowe’s wanted to give back to cities hit hard by the hurricane along the North Carolina and South Carolina border.
Each bag handed out will feed a family of four, which means 2,000 people Lowe’s provided with Thanksgiving meals for the holiday. A bag contained a grilled turkey, pie, two sides, and a $10 gift card to Lowe’s. Although the caterers slowed the event by 30 minutes, Lowe’s workers handed out water bottles to those in line.
Lowe’s Laurinburg Store Manager Bruce Joyner was proud to have a hand in giving back.
“We were hit hard, some people still are displaced or cannot use their kitchens to cook,” said Joyner. “It feels good to work for a company that gives back.”
The waiting line was almost as long as the parking lot as locals stood and sat in place for their meals.
“It is a blessing and it’s the way it is supposed to be,” said Barbara Smith. “We give to them and, as they grow, they help the community grow.”
Families of Lowe’s associates affected by Florence also could receive a family meal.
“My son has worked for them for years so I am blessed by Lowe’s in many ways,” said Betty Graham.
Workers stood in line with the father and son owners of Driggers Pro Services and shared their stories from Florence.
“My home was ruined when I got back to it, the flooring, air ducts, food and fridge all gone while I was out clearing roads,” said David Driggers.
His son, Ronald, said their company volunteered during and after Florence.
“Most of our chains were bought from Lowe’s during the hurricane so I am grateful they are giving back,” said Chase Gibson, a worker for Driggers Pro Services.
Meals were handed out from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
