LAURINBURG— St. Andrew’s University expects hundreds of graduates to return to the school this weekend for Alumni Weekend..
Dr. James Henery, interim director of communications, said that the weekend is a good opportunity to show off the campus.
“This is the only occasion for many of the alumni to come back to the campus over the year,” Henery said. “We’re expecting around 300 to 350 alumni to come out and enjoy all the events we have going on.”
Today’s events start at 9 a.m.and going until to noon. There will be the alumni registration at Belk main lounge.
There will be educational tours, which start at Vardell and FLora Macdonald and Presbyterian Junior College 1958 class reunions will be held at the DeTamble Library.
At 10 a.m., there will be an alumni soccer game at the soccer fields as well as four class reunions; the class of 1978 will be in the Orange Main Lounge; the class at 1978 will be at Knight Life; the class of 1983 will be in the Sinclair dining room, or the downstairs Belk cafeteria; and the class of 1993 will have their reunion at the Belk upstairs terrace.
From 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. will be a lakeside lunch with students at the Belk center patio. Followed by at 1 p.m. there will be the spring football game and at 1:10 p.m. to 2 p.m. there is an equestrian tour and a bus will pick up alumni by the athletic center.
At 1:30 p.m. there will also be a “Buttercup Regatte Race” where there will be volleyball, music, and relaxation at Granville Beach.
At 2 p.m. there is a science homecoming that honors Rooney Coffman from the class of 1968 at the Morgan-Jones Science Center. Following that will be a production of “Lend Me a Tenor” at Morris Morgan Theatre from 3 p.m. until around 5 p.m.
There will be an alumni writers’ forum at the Vardell Hagan Choral Room at 4 p.m.. There will be drinks and hors d’oeuvres at the Belk Center’s from porch at 5 p.m. followed by a picnic at 6 p.m.
At 7 p.m. the night will end with an alumni party with a DJ at teh Belk Center patio.
Other events for the weekend include a softball tournament at the athletic field Friday-Sunday, the DeTamble Library will have archives hours from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday.
The book store will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and there will be another performance of “Lend Me a Tenor” at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
The event started yesterday with several events including an alumni dinner that 140 people attended and an art show gathering.
