SAU baseball team comes up short
LAURINBURG —The NCAA Division II Chowan University baseball team used a late surge to defeat St. Andrews 11-9 on Tuesday.
Chowan outscored St. Andrews 8-3 in the seventh and eighth innings. That helped the Hawks turn the tables after falling behind 6-3 in the sixth inning.
St. Andrews out-hit Chowan 11-10.
St. Andrews infielder Dean Pulley finished with a home run, a double, a sacrifice fly and five RBIs. Third baseman Jaxon Snider scored three runs for the Knights, and center fielder Kacey Otto scored two runs. Otto also had three hits and a double.
Chowan designated hitter Jared Fry tallied five RBIs. Fry, Jack Kane and Patrick Krack hit home runs for the Hawks.
The Knights (4-5) suffered their third loss in a row. They’ll look to undo that trend when they host Grace College for a three-game series this weekend. The series will consist of noon doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.
Chowan (3-3) has a chance to pick up its third win in a row when the Hawks travel to UNC-Pembroke on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Lady Knights fall to NCAA Div. III Monarchs
LAURINBURG — In its season opener, The St. Andrews University women’s lacrosse team lost to Methodist 18-4 on Tuesday.
Methodist, and NCAA Division III school, outscored St. Andrews 10-1 in the first half. Keegan Foyles led Methodist with eight goals. Ally Nagel added three goals.
Alia Loydd, Faith Hildebran, Kelsey Houser and Shania Johnson scored one goal apiece for the Lady Knights. Houser recorded a team-high four shots on goal.
The Lady Knights will open Appalachian Athletic Conference play with a game at Columbia College on Saturday. They’ll return home for a non-conference matchup with Salem College on Feb. 18.
Softball team set to play Mount Olive
The St. Andrews softball team will play a doubleheader at Mount Olive beginning at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. The Lady Knights will look to stay on track after picking up their first win of the season, a 1-0 victory over Converse College on Monday.
