LAURINBURG — The Women’s Services Unit at Scotland Health Care System is using new technology to improve comfort for laboring mothers and newly arrived infants.

Investment in the equipment is part of the system’s focus on providing safe, quality care and the best possible patient experience.

Many laboring women are faced with the challenge of laboring in a bed for a long period time and/or remaining in a certain position to ensure the fetal heart rate and contraction are traced. Scotland’s ultimate goal is to provide comfort while providing safe quality care to the mom and her baby therefore they have invested in a system that gives mom the freedom to labor in different position such sitting, standing and walking as well as showering.

Scotland would like to introduce the Novii monitor. It traces the baby’s and mother’s heartbeat and any contractions the mother has, without keeping her restricted to the hospital bed or in certain positions.

The Novii monitoring system gives the laboring mother the freedom to walk around and to sit comfortably in a bedside chair or rocker. The monitor is waterproof therefore allowing the mother the option to use comfort measures such as showering while the baby’s fetal heart rate and contractions are being monitored.

Nurses and physicians appreciate the monitoring system’s back-lit screen and keys, which maintain a low-light environment while allowing easy access to information on the fetal monitor.

“The experience of our moms and babies is most important,” said Michelle Herberg, BSN, RNC-OB, Women’s Care Unit director. “Our team is so excited about how this new equipment is improving the experience for our patients.”

Scotland Health Care is continuing its $2.5 million women’s renovation project, providing new moms and moms-to-be with upgraded facilities featuring the latest in comfort and technology which should be completed at the end of the year.
