LAURINBURG —Folks were doing a lot of shredding Friday in Laurinburg, but it wasn’t with skateboards.

State Employees’ Credit Union held its annual “shred day,” where community members gathered to safely dispose of documents containing personal information.

The process is done with the help of a mobile shredding truck that lifts and empties bins into a built-in shredder while displaying the disposal process on a screen for customers to watch.

According to SECU employee Matthew Jarrell, although SECU holds shred days once per year, if needed the organization can request more days according to the turnout at the events.

Shred days are free to the public and are not restricted to SECU members only.

According to shredit.com, “All destroyed paper is 100 percent securely recycled.”

Non-paper items were not permitted for disposal.

According to SECU’s website, “Shredding events are scheduled to run for three hours. However, events may end sooner if the shred truck reaches capacity earlier. SECU shred events are intended for securely destroying paper documents, including staples, paperclips, and folders. Non-paper items such as batteries and electronics are not permitted as they may lead to shred truck damage, including fire. Shred days are for personal documents only – no business or commercial shredding.” To find a location or to learn more about shred days, visit https://www.ncsecu.org/.
