WAKE FORECT — Award-winning journalist Logan Martinez was named editor of The Wake Weekly and the Butner-Creedmoor News this week, President and Publisher Keven Zepezauer announced. Martinez previously served as sports editor of The Laurinburg Exchange for two years.
Martinez, 27, will oversee the day-to-day operations of both newsrooms and direct coverage for the weekly newspapers. A redesign of the papers’ print editions coincides with his first week on the job.
“We’re excited to bring Logan on board as the leader of our news-gathering efforts in Wake Forest and Butner-Creeedmoor, and we are confident that he’ll help guide the staff and make sure our papers are accurate, informative and relevant each week,” Zepezauer said.
Martinez previously served as editor of the Sanford Herald. Martinez worked at the Herald, a daily newspaper in Lee County, since 2016.
While at The Exchange, Martinez was honored for his work in 2015 by the North Carolina Press Association. In 2016, Martinez was a member of the Herald’s editorial board, which earned recognition in the NCPA’s annual News, Editorial and Photojournalism Contest.
“It is an honor to be named the next editor of the Wake Weekly and the Butner-Creedmoor News,” Martinez said. “Our readers are passionate about local news, and we will provide it to them in interesting and innovative ways. I am thrilled to take the helm and lead these two weekly newspapers into a new era of community coverage.”
Martinez, who grew up in Fayetteville, is a 2013 graduate from UNC-Chapel Hill. His interests include traveling, trying new food and watching college basketball.
The Wilson Times Co. purchased The Wake Weekly and the Butner-Creedmoor News from previous owner Todd Allen on Jan. 25.
