LAURINBURG —Laurinburg council member Drew Williamson filed for a second term to represent District 2.

Williamson was the only person to file Thursday for the 2017 municipal elections.

“As a native of Laurinburg, I’ve witnessed both periods of growth for our city as well as recent challenges that all small cities are facing. I’m committed to moving our city forward and representing Laurinburg in a positive manner and hope to be allowed to continue to serve the citizens,” Williamson said.

The Laurinburg attorney was initially appointed to council in 2011 and was elected to represent District 2 in 2013. He is a former chair of the Laurinburg/Scotland County Area Chamber of Commerce, former president of the Laurinburg Rotary Club, former chair of the Scotia Village Board of Trustees and The Presbyterian Homes, Inc. Board of Trustees. He is a member of Laurinburg Presbyterian Church,

A graduate of Scotland High School, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Wake Forest University School of Law, Williamson is a partner with Williamson, Dean, Williamson and Sojka.

District 2 challenger Frank Evans filed on Monday.

Those wishing to file for one of the offices can do so weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Scotland County Board of Elections office at 231 E Cronly St. Laurinburg. Filing ends July 21 at noon.

There are three open seats on the Laurinburg City Council. They are held by Williamson; Dolores Dee Hammond for the at-large seat; and J. D. Willis, District 1.

In East Laurinburg, the open seats include Mayor Wayne Caulder; Town Commissioner David Cooper; Town Commissioner Tyresa Haywood; and Town Commissioner Kenny Morton.

In the town of Gibson, those up for re-election include Mayor Ronnie Hudson; Town Commissioner Lula Adell Cottingham; Town Commissioner Mack (Pete) Wilkins; and Town Commissioner Ken Haney.

In Wagram seats open this year include Mayor Milton W. Farmer; Council Member William P. Stewart; Council Member Hyner Massey Jr.; and Council Member Robert L. McLaughlin.

The town of Maxton, the open seats include Town Commissioner Virgil L. Hutchinson and the vacant seat of the late Town Commissioner Margaret Gilchrist.

Filing fees for the upcoming municipal elections are: $36 for Maxton; $25 for Laurinburg; $15 for Gibson; $18 to run for mayor and $12 to run for town commissioner East Laurinburg; and the fee is $5 to file for Wagram.
