LAURINBURG — Cypress Creek Golf Links will host their spring veteran’s tournament on Friday, March 31.

The tournament is a four-player captain’s choice style tournament that will feature a catered lunch — the first 76 veterans who sign up will receive the lunch for free.

The lunch and the tournament is a way the staff at Cypress Creek say thank you to the veterans who sacrificed and served their country.

This year’s tournament will feature guest speaker Dennis Helms, a U.S. Army veteran. Helms served in the 3rd Battalion 187 Infantry of the 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War. He and his unit fought in the Battle of Hamburger Hill, which lasted 10 days, from May 10-20, 1969. It was one of the most important battles of the Vietnam War and was memorialized in the best selling book Hamburger Hill.

The Battle of Hamburger Hill, was part of Operation Apache Snow, was fought between U.S. and South Vietnam troops against the North Vietnamese. The United States ordered the capture of Hill 937 the battle was primarily an infantry engagement, with the U.S. Airborne troops moving up the steeply-sloped hill against well entrenched troops. The Airborne troops eventually took the hill through direct assault.
