Laurinburg Exchange

Defensive Player of the Week

LAURINBURG — Manny Smith is a 6-foot 2-inch junior at Scotland High School. He is also one of the starting free safety, wearing No. 23, for the Fighting Scots this season and has been named this week’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Each Friday, the Exchange will feature one offensive, one defensive and one special teams player from the Fighting Scots, chosen by the coaches, to be the Players of the Week.

Manny has been a constant contributor on defense with one interception and one fumble recovery so far this year. Last week against Lumberton, Manny made several key tackles to keep the Pirates from gaining any kind of positive yardage, which is why head coach Richard Bailey selected him as the Defensive Player of the Week.

“Manny is a very smart and physical football player and is someone who is always around the ball” said Bailey.

The 175-pound junior hopes he can continue his football career when he graduates but is still undecided on where he wants to attend college. All Manny knows is he will go to whichever college offers him a full-ride scholarship with a great football program. When Manny finally selects a college he plans to major in pharmacy to pursue a career as a pharmacist.

Something people might not know about Many is that he is a fun, energetic person.

When asked what he is most looking forward to in the 2016 season Many said for he and his teammates to accomplish all of their goals.
