CCAA basketball tournament resumes Thursday

LAURINBURG — The Carolinas Christian Athletic Association basketball tournaments are set to continue at Scotland Christian Academy on Thursday night.

The first round of the CCAA girls basketball tournament was played on Tuesday. The CCAA boys tournament will begin Thursday. Both tournaments will resume on Friday and conclude on Saturday.

In the first round of the girls tournament, fifth-seeded Scotland Christian defeated fourth-seeded Mintz Christian 46-43. The Lady Saints outscored Mintz Christian 16-8 in the second period after falling behind 12-7 in the first quarter. After that surge, Scotland Christian was able to hang on for the win despite being outscored 16-14 in the fourth quarter.

Scotland Christian’s Lily Cartrette posted a team-high 23 points. Cartrette made four 3-pointers. McKinley Taylor added 11 points. Lindsey Newton grabbed 11 rebounds for the Lady Saints.

The Lady Saints advanced to face top-seeded Antioch Christian in the semifinals on Friday at 2 p.m. Antioch received a first-round bye.

In other girls basketball action on Tuesday, No. 2 Liberty Christian defeated No. 7 Liberty Christian 38-25. No. 3 Temple Christian defeated No. 6 Grace Christian; a final score from that game has not yet been reported.

On Thursday, No. 2 Antioch Christian will face No. 7 Grace Christian in the boys tournament opener at 4 p.m. No. 3 Liberty Christian will face No. 6 Mintz Christian at 5:30 p.m., and No. 4 Columbus Christian will play No. 5 Christ the Cornerstone Academy at 7 p.m.

Four more games will be played on Friday. Scotland Christian’s girls will face Antioch Christian at 2 p.m. That will be followed by a boys game at 3:30 between the winners of Antioch-Grace and Liberty-Mintz. At 5 p.m., the girls tournament will resume with a game between Temple Christian and Columbus Christian. Scotland Christian’s boys team, which earned a first-round bye as the No. 1 seed, will make its tournament debut at 6:30 p.m. They’ll play the winner of Thursday’s game between Columbus Christian and Christ the Cornerstone.

The tournament will conclude with another set of four games on Saturday. First up will be consolation games (girls at 10 a.m., boys at 11:30 a.m.). The girls championship game will begin at 1 p.m., followed by the boys championship game at 2:30.

All games will be played at Scotland Christian’s gym. There will be a 10-minute break in between games. Games might start earlier than anticipated if the tournament is running ahead of schedule.
