Dean gives teammates credit for his success

LAURINBURG — Micah Dean was at work when he found out he was named the United Soccer Coaches/MaxPreps Boys Soccer Player of the Week for the the state of North Carolina.

The news took Scotland Christian Academy’s soccer captain by surprise.

“I was at work, and everyone was like, ‘You’re all over Facebook,’” Dean said. “So I pulled out my phone, and I was like, ‘What in the world?’”

Dean has been the driving force of the Saints’ offense. He tallied 34 goals and 10 assists through the first 10 games of the season. With his help, the Saints have earned a 9-1 record with two games remaining in the regular season.

Dean was glad to accept his national award, especially because it wasn’t something he was aiming for.

“I just play to have fun,” Dean said. “I don’t do it to show off. I was very excited.”

The Saints are currently on a seven-game winning streak that started after the team’s first and only setback of the season, a 2-1 loss at Columbus Christian Academy. Scotland Christian is set to play its final home game of the season against Temple Christian at 4 p.m. on Friday at the James L. Morgan Recreation Complex. The Saints will conclude the regular season with a road game against local opponent Christ the Cornerstone Academy next Tuesday.

The Saints have been successful despite dealing with some inexperience. Many of the Saints hadn’t played competitive soccer prior to this year, so the team has spent a lot of time working on fundamentals and communication skills.

Dean said they’ve come a long way, and he added that his teammates deserve a lot of credit for his accomplishments.

“My teammates have been helping me out by getting down the field,” Dean said.
