SOUTHERN PINES — Scotland’s cross country team competed in a Sandhills Athletic Conference meet at Elks Lodge earlier this week.

In the girls 5K race, Scotland’s Madison Williams logged a sixth-place finish (22:35.90). She finished two seconds behind Kylie Chavis of Purnell Swett. Williams and Chavis were in the middle of a pack of Pinecrest runners. Pinecrest’s Carmen Alder won the race (19:33).

Scotland’s Tabitha Williams finished in 13th place (24:39.20). She was followed by teammates Bethany Matthews (15th, 24:41.20) and Carson Buie (16th, 24:45.60). Mikayla Tucker (21st, 25:31.45) rounded out Scotland’s top five finishers.

In the boys race, Jackson Sellers represented Scotland in the top 10 (9th, 19:33). He was followed by Cooper Sutherland (17th, 19:56), Aaron Aycock (26th, 20:23), Keldon Clark (29th, 20:33) and Jennings Dean (34th, 20:48).

Final team standings were not readily available, but Pinecrest appeared to have the upper hand in both races. Pinecrest had six runners finish in the top 10 of the girls race, and seven runners in the top 10 of the boys race.

Next up for Scotland is the conference championship meet on Oct. 22. Regionals will take place on Nov. 2, and the state meet will be held on Nov. 9.
