LAURINBURG — The drought is over.
Scotland’s girls soccer team earned its first win of the season with a 6-1 victory against Seventy-First in Sandhills Athletic Conference action on Tuesday evening. Sophomore Emma Herr registered a hat trick for the Lady Scots (1-12, 1-9 SAC). Scotland’s Beatrice Eddy notched two goals and an assist.
“We’re now playing as a team,” Herr said. “We can use the confidence from this win to push forward and play Pinecrest tomorrow.”
Destiny Caulder added a goal and an assist for the Lady Scots. She gave Scotland a 2-0 halftime lead after rebounding a shot by Herr late in the first half.
“I saw a lot of ball movement,” Scotland coach Blake Dickerson said. “We’re still missing that presence in the center midfield. It’s getting better. Our defense was definitely moving the ball and transitioning to the offense a lot better tonight, and that definitely made for better runs.”
Arana Blake scored Seventy-First’s only goal. She put the Lady Falcons (4-10, 0-10) on the scoreboard in the second half after Scotland had already taken a 5-1 lead.
Eaddy broke away from the defense to score the first goal of the game with just under 30 minutes left in the first half. Caulder then scored to build Scotland’s lead at intermission. Herr made it 3-0 with the help of an assist by Eaddy early in the second half.
Eaddy logged her second goal with just over 27 minutes left in the game. Herr scored less than a minute later to make it 5-0.
After Blake found the back of the net, Caulder assisted Herr on her third goal of the night.
Seventy-First was one player short on Tuesday, and Dickerson said that helped the Lady Scots in some ways. He told his players not to expect that to happen again when Scotland travels to Seventy-First next week.
The first-year coach said he wants his team to enjoy being in the win column for the first time this season, regardless of the circumstances.
Scotland hosts Pinecrest, the SAC’s undefeated leader, at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
