O’Brien tosses no-hitter

LAURINBURG — The St. Andrews University baseball team used several strong performances on the mound, including a no-hitter by junior Davis O’Brien, to complete a four-game sweep of West Virginia University Institute of Technology over the weekend.

The Knights won seven-inning doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.

Game 1: SAU 2, WVU Tech 0

O’Brien recorded six strikeouts and held the Golden Bears hitless in the first game of the series.

Seth Spillman and Cam Harvey picked up one RBI apiece for the Knights. Dean Pulley and Kristopher Allen scored St. Andrews’ two runs.

Game 2: SAU 3, WVU Tech 1

The Knights took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after an RBI by Spillman and a wild pitch. An RBI single by Spillman gave the Knights a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning.

Shortstop Noah Lawson finished 1-for-2 with a run scored for St. Andrews.

Freshman pitcher Nate Moretz struck out seven batters and allowed just one hit in six innings of work for the Knights.

Game 3: SAU 3, WVU Tech 0

Senior Michael Wright continued St. Andrews’ string of quality starts, helping the Knights clinch the series by shutting out the Golden Bears.

The Knights were led by third basemen J.R. Polak, who hit 2-for-3 and recorded an RBI. Allen was hit by a pitch twice and recorded an RBI.

Game 4: SAU 7, WVU Tech 2

Lawson went 3-for-4 in his at-bats and recorded four runs to help the Knights finish of the sweep.

Left fielder Noah Whalen finished 4-for-4 and tallied two runs and two RBIs.

Chris Stubbs hit 1-for-3 and logged three RBIs for the Knights.

The Knights now are now 7-1. This is St. Andrews’ best start since 2013, when they went 9-1 to begin their season. The Golden Bears, after coming into this series at 3-1, now fall to 3-5 on their season.

Women’s lacrosse team drops home opener

The St. Andrews women’s lacrosse team dropped its season opener to Keiser University on Saturday afternoon, 20-3.

Keiser outscored St. Andrews 12-1 in the first half. The lone goal for St. Andrews was scored by sophomore Briana Minter, whp would find the back of the net once more in the second half.

Freshman Karlie Holman scored the Lady Knights’ other goal in the second half.

Minter’s second-half goal was assisted by Arial Hendricks, and Holman was assisted by Daphne McMillen.

Wrestling team loses on senior night

The St. Andrews wrestling team fell to conference foe Reinhardt University 56-0 on Saturday evening. The Eagles remained undefeated in NAIA competition.

The Eagles benefited from several forfeits by the Knights (133, 149, 157 and 197 -pound weight classes).

The lone senior for the Knights, Aaron Vaughan, suffered a 5-2 loss by decision against Hinton Boilenger in the 285-pound bout.
