LAURINBURG — A game-winning 3-pointer by David Campbell with around one second left in the game gave Scotland’s boys basketball team a 60-59 victory against Lumberton on Tuesday night.

Campbell’s contested shot from the corner came after Kris McLean trimmed Lumberton’s lead to 59-57 with nine seconds left in the game. Lumberton’s Shaleek Baker, who had previously made a 3-pointer to give the Pirates a 56-55 lead with one minute left, missed a pair of free throws, and that allowed Scotland to get the ball back for the game-winning shot.

Scotland’s bench swarmed Campbell on the court after the basket, but the officials determined that there was still one second left in the game. As time expired, a full-court inbounds pass by the Pirates was unsuccessful.

Campbell, who finished with nine points on a trio of 3-pointers, said there wasn’t much going through his head when he received the ball with a chance to win the game.

“I was just trying to make it,” Campbell said with a smile.

Scotland head coach Matt Justin said he was comfortable with Campbell taking the shot instead of the Scots trying to tie the game with a layup.

“He had a good look,” Justin said. “He had a great chance. He made a couple of them earlier in the game. I thought he got fouled too.”

It was enough to get past the Pirates, who were paced by Braylan Grice’s 14-point performance. Kwashek Breeden added 13 points for Lumberton.

The Pirates are now 3-2 in their last five games.

Garrett McRae scored 17 points for Scotland. Trey Graham and Khalib Simmons joined Campbell with nine points apiece. C.J. Settles and Bryant Williams had six points apiece.

Scotland snapped a three-game losing streak.

“It’s a huge win, especially when you win at a buzzer beater,” Justin said. “I felt like we completely outplayed them in the first half, and then stumbled and fumbled in the second half. I’d be really disappointed if we didn’t get the win, because I felt like we played better than them tonight.”

Scotland took advantage of a sluggish Lumberton offense early in the game, jumping out to a 15-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. After McRae stretched that lead to 14 points with a free throw in the second quarter, Grice closed Scotland’s lead to 32-22 with a basket just before halftime.

Lumberton continued to put a dent in Scotland’s lead early in the second half. They outscored Scotland 12-9 in the third quarter with the help of five points from guard Jordan McNeill, who finished the game with nine points.

After Baker’s 3-pointer gave the Pirates a one-point lead with one minute left in the game, Breeden extended the lead to three points with a dunk.

Scotland’s Trey Graham and Lumberton’s Caleb Kelly both came up empty in trips to the free throw line. The Scots were then tagged with an inbounds violation, giving the Pirates the ball as the game’s final minute continued to deplete.

Kelly was fouled and made one of two free throws to give Lumberton a 59-55 lead, but the Scots responded with McLean’s basket with nine seconds left.

Both teams will now prepare for their rivalry matchups scheduled for Friday. Scotland (4-11, 2-4) plays at Richmond, and Lumberton (11-5, 3-3) hosts Purnell Swett.

Lady Pirates defeat Scotland

Madison Canady scored 19 points to help Lumberton’s girls basketball team defeat Scotland 54-40 on Tuesday night.

Rachel O’Neil added 12 points for the Lady Pirates (8-5, 3-3), who won their second straight game.

Asjah Swindell led the Lady Scots (6-9, 1-5) with 12 points. Niaria Leach added seven points.

Swindell trimmed Lumberton’s lead to 44-35 with a basket early in the fourth quarter, but that was the final time the Lady Scots got within 10 points of the visitors. Canady made a basket to give Lumberton a 46-35 lead, and the Lady Pirates were able to keep Scotland out of striking distance for the rest of the game.

Scotland held a 29-26 lead at halftime, but Lumberton outscored the Lady Scots 16-3 in the third quarter. Nautika Moore scored all of Scotland’s three points in the period.

“I was satisfied with the first half,” Scotland coach Mallarie Snow said. “The second half, I think we were pretty complacent. We had 15 turnovers. That’s just too much. I think we had 25 turnovers total.”

The Lady Scots saw their losing streak stretch to four games.
